Jodi Benson shared with us some songs that she finds helpful and healing during this difficult season. You can listen to her playlist here and read her thoughts on her selections below!
Song: “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid (Howard Ashman & Alan Menken)
Album: The Little Mermaid Soundtrack
“I chose this not because it’s my song, but because a lot of people have reached out to me saying this song is really helping them cope with this global unsettling situation right now. The lyrics are so meaningful.”
Song: “We Are Family”
Performers: Sister Sledge
Album: We Are Family
“I’m missing my family in Illinois so much. It was my Mom’s 90th birthday on April 5. My kids and I were flying to Chicago to surprise her for her birthday, so it’s heartbreaking to not be with her. But this is our ‘family song’ that we’ve always danced to together—brings us so much joy and laughter.”
Song: “Trust in You”
Performer: Lauren Daigle
Album: How Can It Be
“I love these lyrics. For me, as a person of faith, when it seems like everything in the world has been shaken and turned upside down, this song brings me tremendous comfort. I remember who I can put my trust in and where my hope is found.”
Song: “Moses Supposes” from Singin’ in the Rain (Roger Edens, Betty Comden, Adolph Green)
Performers: Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor
Album: Singin’ in the Rain: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
“My husband Ray played Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly role) on Broadway as the stand by, and during our family’s ‘shelter in place’ he’s teaching our daughter Delaney the original choreography to this song and they are having so much fun doing this dance duet together. Thankful for all the laughs and smiles this song is bringing into our home right now.”
Song: “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” (Nickolas Ashford & Valeri Simpson)
Performers: Marvin Gaye, Tammi Terrell
Album: United
“This song is so upbeat and inspiring. This is also my son McKinley and his longtime girlfriend Mackenzie’s special song, especially since they have had a long distance relationship for the past 4 years now with her in San Fran at college and McKinley at college in Atlanta. I have always loved this song.”
